I am excited this year for the October art challenge. I have previously either made my own prompt list or cherry picked from various lists based on my mood and inspiration, but this year I think I am going to follow the official inktober prompt list. It has a lot of really good prompts on it. But in the meantime, I am testing out various supplies I may want to use. I think I will end up using my Pentel brush pen for the overall line work and the pointliners for the finer details.

Anyone else thinking about joining an October art challenge this year? If so, which one?

Mixed media art often raises an interesting question: is it better to develop deep expertise in one technique, or explore several materials and styles?

Working with paint, ink, paper, markers, collage, or found objects can build a broader understanding of how different materials behave together. At the same time, spending more time with one technique can lead to greater control and confidence. I think the best mixed media work often comes from having a strong foundation while still leaving room to experiment.

What do you prefer: mastering a few materials or constantly trying something new?

I recently came across a similar discussion about the difference between depth and broader subject coverage in digital content: Topical Authority vs Expertise.

I recently found this new type of paint from folk art paint provider that has a terra-cotta finish and I love the way it works on paper as a interesting surface to then use watercolor or colored pencil… This is watercolor on the surface and it’s so so interesting how the watercolor moves around and bleeds in a way that’s different than regular paper
