Pentel Creator Collective Featured Creator: JOSF – Lettering + Calligraphy Pro Kit
Hello my creative peoples! My name is JOSF and I am a forever student of all lettering styles. From graffiti art, calligraphy, black lettering, sign painting, to Japanese shodo and Arabic khatt, I really can’t get enough. Though I spend my days in Brooklyn, NY designing custom tattoos, logos and branding, and commissioned paintings, I am originally from the Bay Area, CA where I initially became obsessed with lettering as a young boy.
Almost surprised to admit this, over my 30+ year journey ( I know!), I still get excited finding new tools and ways to use these tools to create whats been marinating in my imagination.
From thinning floor paint into shoe polish applicators, to converting cleaners and bug spray aerosol tips for wider spray paint strokes, I was always on the hunt. It is definitely noteworthy to mention Ujima’s in the Mission district on the base of Bernal Heights. This was like a rogue graffiti art supply store that may have been one of the first times I got my hands on the Pentel WHITE 100W broad paint marker, quite the game changer for me. And how awesome is that, full circle after all these years!
Sometime in my later teens, I became serious about pushing my art and love for lettering, budding into a career of graffiti art and murals. The more I painted, the more contracts and commissions I solidified, and over the years the designing process evolved. My necessity for having the right tools for my trade became more important for precision.
Pentel’s vast line of quality consistent products became a staple for me. Over my years and years… and years of using various art supply company pens, inks and markers, I found myself coming back to Pentel brand strictly for reliability. Nibs last longer, ink remains as intended, and the variety of tools allowed me to stay flexible in use. As well, and as you may know, the more familiar you get with any particular tool, the more versatile use you can create. All of which I can attribute to my style of lettering, which I can only describe as elegant and intimidating,.. like a grim reaper in a 3-piece suit or a rich rose in bloom with the sharpest of thorns.
With that said, when Chris Koehler reached out with the opportunity to create the Pentel Arts Calligraphy Pro Kit, I was completely surprised, beyond excited, and honored to make this happen. Ultimately, we decided best to focus on three keys styles for the Pro Kit; Calligraphy, Graffiti, and Back Lettering. My plan was to elaborate on each style to break down some base fundamentals that can be achieved with this particular set. I had such a dope time going through Pentel’s catalogue, sampling and testing out an incredible range of products. I am very excited for the set I was able to procure, each chosen specifically for lettering. With the Tips and Tricks, you can begin to grasp the concept behind the tools for the style, and in combination with my upcoming Live Stream free workshop, I can show you exactly how I use these tools to create pro-level calligraphy.
